11/13/2008 - Amsterdam, Netherlands (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Usually when Ajax and PSV Eindhoven square off, one team is leading the league while the other is sitting just a few points back and trying to pull even.
However, that is not the case with Sunday's matchup, as Ajax is second in the table while the four-time defending champions have gotten off to an indifferent start and sit in fifth place.
Another odd occurrence ahead of Sunday's showdown is that both teams enter the match off of Dutch Cup losses on Thursday, with Ajax dropping a 1-0 decision to last-place Volendam in extra time, while PSV also fell 1-0 to league- leaders AZ Alkmaar.
Despite being eliminated, PSV boss Huub Stevens remained upbeat after the match, and feels that his side can gain confidence from the way they played.
"PSV were well-organized and I think we have put in a decent display," Stevens said following the AZ match on Thursday. "It's too bad we have been eliminated from the Dutch Cup, but tonight's result gives us confidence for the future. Any team will face a tall task against AZ in Alkmaar."
While Stevens was pleased with his team's effort, Ajax manager Marco van Basten was not so thrilled following his squad's loss, pointing out how big a loss striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar is.
"We missed a player who could finish the chances," the manager said of Huntelaar. "It was a strange preparation for the match."
Huntelaar leads Ajax with six goals this season, but he suffered a torn anterior ankle ligament in his left foot in the team's 5-2 win over Sparta last weekend, which will sideline the Dutch international for six weeks.
With Huntelaar out, the scoring load will fall to Luis Suarez, who has tallied five times so far this campaign.
PSV came away from Amsterdam with a 2-0 win last season, while the two teams played to a 0-0 draw in the return fixture played in Eindhoven.
With four losses in its first 10 games and a four-point deficit to leaders AZ, PSV will be desperate to pick up three points and get its title chase back on track, especially against a wounded Ajax side.
AZ will also be in action on Sunday as the team visits bottom-half side Vitesse, fourth-place Groningen hosts Graafschap and Feyenoord travels to Arke Stadion to meet Twente.
On Saturday, Heerenveen plays host to Utrecht, last-place Volendam invades Sparta, Den Haag squares off with Willem II and Roda does battle with NEC.
